Looks Just Like The Sun

It's starting to feel like summer here on the northern tip of Vancouver Island. I was even able to wear flip-flops (thongs, jandals, slipslops...whatever you call them in your respective countries).
Yeah, it may be only 13 degrees, but the sun is shining, and so will my lily-white tootsies!

So what have I been doing during this time of sunshine-y wonderfulness? Making a vegetable garden, going on skate adventures and suntanning....in my bikini.
So I was quite delighted when I stumbled upon this delightful little lookbook...
Unfortunately my wish-list  grew substantially as a result of this discovery.
It does make me a little lonesome for South Africa cause Miami and Durban of their similarities.

Check out Free Peoples' May Catalogue here.

Fresh Music: Animal Astronauts

I know it's not Tunesday, but I couldn't keep this one a secret any longer.
Fresh new band: Animal Astronauts release their first EP...ever.
Sounds like a mishmash of surf-indie-poprocks. Think Surfer Blood meets Cloud Control meets The Beatles meets Flaming Lips meets City in Colour.
Their raw and un-over-processed sound is refreshing in this era of synthetic music.

I'm extra excited about this EP for two reasons: 1- Animal Astronauts is the brainchild of my teenage brother Ritchie Hemphill and his best friend Trevor Lang; and 2- I'm stoked to have some rad new music on my iPod.

My favourite songs? "Rainshine": written about our rainy little hometown on Northern Vancouver Island, BC and "Indebted To You": a song about the many frustrations of modern society and the desire to leave it all behind for the comfort of the forest....and bears, a feeling I'm all too familiar with.

So, like what you hear?
Check out their Facebook Page here.
Buy their EP here.

"I'm gonna ditch this place and live in the woods,
I can't be bothered there.
 Except for maybe the bears,
but I know that we could be friends."

Deep Dish Denim

I have a special place in my heart for denim.  Do you remember when you were a kid: you'd come home from school in your pretty little dress and whatnot and mom would make you change into your "play clothes" which always included your faithful pair of jeans.
Denim holds that nostalgic playfulness that makes me want to play in a mud pit, or build a lego house.

So naturally I was ecstatic when I was perusing Foam Mag and stumbled upon Denim Refinery. Vintage denim art? Yes please.

Want some? Check it out here.
